DESIGN NOTES

What we had to solve

  1. A scroll wheel in 7 mm

Keeping a real, physical wheel without the bulk: 7 mm flat, 10 mm at the wheel.

  2. A real-mouse feel

Shaping the arch so your palm rests on it like a regular mouse, not a flat travel mouse.

  3. Everything inside 7 mm

Fitting the battery, electronics and magnets into a body thinner than a phone.

  4. Where hard meets soft

Joining the rigid shell and the flexible spine so the fold looks and feels seamless.

  5. A lifted front edge

A slight rise at the front keeps tracking reliable and gives your finger an edge to lift Ardix off a magnet.

  6. Shortcuts with no software

Making one side key copy, paste, switch desktops and take screenshots on Windows and macOS, with nothing to install.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Ardix?

Ardix is a foldable Bluetooth travel mouse for remote work and working on the go. It lies flat at 7 mm to carry and bends into a curved mouse to work, with a physical scroll wheel and a shortcut side key. It works with Windows laptops, MacBook, iPhone, iPad and Android, with no USB receiver. It is a working prototype and is coming to Kickstarter.

Is a foldable mouse worth it?

Yes, if you carry a laptop or tablet in a slim bag and find a trackpad tiring for longer work. Ardix lies flat at 7 mm in the bag and works as a real mouse when bent. If you mostly work at one desk, a full-size mouse is more comfortable.

How thin is Ardix, and is it the thinnest foldable mouse?

Ardix is 7 mm thick at its flat main body and 10 mm at the scroll wheel. Flat, it measures 116 × 60 × 7 mm. It is not the thinnest: Air.0 (OriMouse) is under 5 mm across most of its body, but 14 mm at the sensor and 128 × 125 mm flat.

Which foldable mouse has a real scroll wheel?

Ardix has a physical scroll wheel. The other foldable mice we compared use touch scrolling: a touch scroll bar on Logitech Mobi Fold, a touch scroll plane on Microsoft Surface Arc and a touch scroll sensor on Air.0.

Can I copy and paste without a keyboard?

Yes, with the side key. Hold the side key and left-click to copy, or right-click to paste. Hold it and scroll forward or back to switch desktops, like a four-finger swipe on a Mac trackpad. Double-press it to take a screenshot. The shortcuts work on Windows and macOS with no software.

How do I use a mouse with an iPhone?

Turn on AssistiveTouch, then pair the mouse over Bluetooth: Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch > Devices > Bluetooth Devices. A pointer appears on screen, and you can change its tracking speed in the AssistiveTouch menu. Any Bluetooth mouse works this way. Ardix also snaps onto the back of a MagSafe iPhone, so the phone and the mouse travel together.

How do I carry a mouse when traveling?

Attach it to the device you already carry. Stick the Ardix magnetic ring to the back of your laptop or tablet, then snap the flat Ardix onto it. On a MagSafe iPhone it attaches with no ring. Flat, it is 7 mm thick, so it also slides into a laptop sleeve.

What is a good travel mouse for a MacBook Air?

A good MacBook Air travel mouse uses Bluetooth, fits in the laptop sleeve and has a real scroll wheel. Ardix connects over Bluetooth 5.2, lies flat at 7 mm and has a physical scroll wheel. Its side-key shortcuts work on macOS with no software.

What is a good mouse for remote work and digital nomads?

A good mouse for remote work is small enough to carry every day, connects without a USB receiver and works on more than one device. Ardix lies flat at 7 mm in a laptop sleeve, connects over Bluetooth 5.2 and switches between paired devices. Its side-key shortcuts also work inside a remote-desktop app, Mac to Mac or Windows to Windows.

How does Ardix feel to use?

In our testing, Ardix feels better in the hand than the other foldable mice we tried, but not as comfortable as a full-size mouse. When bent, it gives your palm an arch to rest on. It is made for working away from your desk, not all-day desk use. Comfort varies with hand size.

Ardix vs Logitech Mobi Fold: what is the difference?

Ardix is thinner and lighter: 7 mm flat and 50 g, against about 21 mm folded and 79 g for Mobi Fold. Ardix has a physical scroll wheel and a shortcut side key. Mobi Fold has a touch scroll bar and no middle button. Mobi Fold is on sale now; Ardix is a prototype.

When does Ardix launch, and how much will it cost?

Ardix is coming to Kickstarter. The launch date and price have not been announced. Early birds get extra perks. Join the email list to hear when the campaign goes live.
